There’s something very tactile about working with wood and creating something from scratch. We focus on doing the basics well, giving students the chance to enjoy practical work. This means young people get an opportunity to use their hands and to see a real result for their effort, gaining a sense of self-belief and pride in their achievements.

Music
Music is a fantastic outlet for everyone and one that often brings out a different and creative side in our students. A fully equipped studio means that we are able to work in a variety of genres that will appeal to individual students. In some cases, students will start with a desire to record their own music but progress to learn more about the art of production. Our podcasts have been a real revelation, giving our young people a voice the experience of producing a professional sounding podcast.

Repair
Sometimes you just want to take something apart and see what’s inside. It’s also a great way to learn and it’s amazing how the basic principles of engineering are revealed by having a look at the inner workings of a machine. Young people often believe that once something is broken it is broken forever and to realise they have the skills and ability to bring something back to life gives them a real confidence boost.

Cook
Our Cook Workshop provides the opportunity for students not only to learn skills in the kitchen but also offers them the chance to enjoy the fruits of their labours before the end of the session! Cooking is an essential life skill but for our students having the opportunity to cook can have hidden benefits in helping concentration, enhancing creativity, teaching patience and building confidence.

Arts
Young people often feel that the arts can be intimidating and therefore inaccessible. However, art is a great vehicle for creativity and an opportunity for our students to express themselves in their own way, unrestricted by a particular curriculum or goal. This freedom of expression further builds our young people's confidence.

Grow
The mental health benefits of the great outdoors are well-documented and at Grow that is exactly what our young people experience. Many young people don’t have the advantage of rural living and this workshop is a further development in our belief in a positive environment. Experiencing the changing seasons as they learn basic horticulture skills gives a great sense of self and an opportunity to breathe and simply be.
